German Army Steps in to Build Shelters for Newcomers

The German army has teamed up with volunteers to build shelters and provide food for people making their way to their country – the target destination of many migrants landing on Europe’s southern shores.

Channel 4 News ran a feature about the effort the army has put forth to build accommodation centres in the middle of residential areas in Hamburg and other German cities.

Soldiers in Hamburg put up tents for the 300+ migrants arriving each day.

The population of migrants living in Germany rose to a record high of 11million, according to the latest statistics from the Federal Statistics Office. That represents a 3.7% increase over the previous year.

Many of the migrants come from other EU member states including Poland, Romania, Bulgaria as well as Europe’s southern border states Italy and Greece (via Hungary).
